Graduate Admission Process and Guidelines 

Fall 2023

1. Applicants should submit ALL of their application forms and supporting documents in the electronic system via the following link:

2. The application period for the 2022-2023 academic year is between April 17th - June 5th, 2023.

There will be NO additional admission period for the 2022-2023 academic year. The department admits students only for the Fall Term each year. There is no application period for the Spring Term.

3. Departmental requirements for admission include a research proposal, a written test and an interview. All the eligible candidates including those overseas must take the written exam on the indicated date at the institution.

4. The written exam will take place on 15 June 2023, Location: IB 102 at 10.00-13.00

5. The interviews will take place on 21 June 2023, Location: IB 512, at 10.00 - 17.00

Exam and interview dates are the same for both the MA and Ph.D. programmes.

6.Applications with missing documents will not be evaluated. The only documents which are accepted past the application deadline are the undergraduate diploma, ALES/GRE score, and the proof of English Proficiency.

7. A maximum of 14 applicants will be admitted to the MA program.

8. A maximum of 9 applicants will be admitted to the Ph.D. Program.

9. Language of education is English. 14 (Main class) + 2 (English preparatory class)

APPLICATION AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES

FOR THE MASTER OF ARTS (MA) PROGRAM

1. Letters of Recommendation: Three academic letters of recommendation that should be submitted via electronic application form.

2. Research Proposal:  A research proposal between 5-7 pages, type-written in English with a double space and Times New Roman, 12pt, on a topic that the applicant finds important and interesting. The proposal should include the research methods that will be employed, and the primary and secondary sources that will be used. 

Proposals longer than 7 pages and shorter than 5 pages will not be accepted.

3. Undergraduate Diploma: A copy of the diploma authenticated by a notary public or an official certificate of graduation taken from the undergraduate school are accepted.

4. Transcripts: Official transcripts that show all the undergraduate and graduate (if any) courses taken, grades received, and the grade point averages obtained.

5. Undergraduate GPA requirement: Minimum 2.75/4.00 or 70.83/100. The applications that could not meet that criteria at the time of application will not be evaluated.

6. ALES Score (For Turkish Applicants): Minimum General Score (EA): 80

7. GRE Score (for Foreign Applicants, and for Turkish Applicants to be used instead of the ALES):

Old Score System:

Minimum Quantitative Test score: 610/800

Minimum Verbal Test Score: 400/800

Minimum Analytical Writing Test Score: 3.5/6

New Score System:

Minimum Quantitative Test score: 149/170

Minimum Verbal Test Score: 146/170

Minimum Analytical Writing Test Score: 3.5/6

8. Proof of English Proficiency: All applicants are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency prior to registration.

Proof of English proficiency requirement is waived for the following applicants:

i)              Those who have completed a degree at an institution, where the primary language of education is English, in a country where the official language is English and have studied at that institution at least for the last four academic-years of their study.

ii)             Those who have completed an undergraduate degree in Bogazici University and apply within two academic-years following their graduation.

For the proof of English proficiency, you are strongly encouraged to have one of the standardized tests (TOEFL or ILETS) by the application deadline, but the Department will also be accepting the results of the Bogazici University English Proficiency Test (BUEPT).

FOR THE DOCTORATE (PhD) PROGRAM

1. Letters of Recommendation: Three academic letters of recommendation that should be submitted via electronic application form.

2. Copy of Master’s Thesis: For the candidates who have not acquired their degree yet at the time of application deadline, it is sufficient to provide at least one chapter of the ongoing master’s thesis.

3. Research Proposal: A research proposal between 10-15 pages, type-written in English, with a double space and Times New Roman, 12pt, on a topic that the applicant finds important and interesting. The proposal should include the research methods that will be employed, and the primary and secondary sources that will be used. Proposals longer than 15 pages and shorter than 10 pages will not be accepted. 

4. Undergraduate and Graduate Diplomas: A copy of the diploma authenticated by a notary public or an official certificate of graduation taken from the undergraduate school are accepted.

EVALUATION PROCESS

1. Applicant’s research proposal is very important and is read closely and anonymously by the admission committee.

2. The written exam usually consists of three questions for MA candidates and four questions for PhD candidates.

3. All written exams are read anonymously by the admission committee.

4. Applicant’s research proposal, his/her written exam results together with the student’s application package are taken into account in selecting candidates for an interview. Succeeding in the written test is a must in qualifying for the interview, passing the interview is the necessary condition for being admitted to the program.
